Ask Alexander Gavrylyuk about the car crash that almost took his life and the brilliant young Ukrainian pianist shrugs. "It was quite serious," he said. "The doctors feared for my survival."

Gavrylyuk, 20, suffered serious head injuries two years ago in a car that hit a power pole on Grand Parade, Brighton-le-Sands, after it was hit by another vehicle. The pianist, who was studying in Australia, had several risky operations in St George Hospital and was warned that he might not speak or play again.
